  2. As for some reason our captain thought it wouldn't be smart to write an interview with himself making up both questions and answers - here we are with the last part of the "Who is this guy" interview series. This time behind the yadayada is your favorite human being of the whole scene, me. NHL gaming scene is full of different kind of leaders. @Tanski87 is one of those guys. He's this calm, humble but ambitious, "feet on the ground" kind of a leader - that I can tell you. Not perhaps the shiniest individual out there but I think that just fits him. He doesn't need any of that shit as there's plenty of stuff he brings to you as a friend, as a teammate on the ice and as a leader. He has played on almost every ECL season there has ever been; six of them in Rusty Blades as a team captain and now he has started his second season with Roots, also being a team captain. We all have probably played against him during the recent years and seen the guy on the ice and what he can do out there. "But who is this guy?" - let's find out! Name: Juhani "Tanski87" Tanskanen Age: 32 From: Riihimäki, Finland ECL Elite (before ECL10): Games: 170 Goals: 8 Assist: 64 Hits: 858 So lets start this with an easy one - who the hell is Tanski87? Like seriously, I need more than your jersey number here! I don't know if there is much to tell about me. I am a father of three little children, the small loves of my life. For my living, I build houses and other buildings, basically anything made of wood, steel or concrete. That is what I have been doing since I was 16 years old. Hockey and family are my greatest passions, virtual hockey included. You've been a team captain since ECL3 (2016). There must be tons of stories you could tell us - but what things have been the most crucial or absorbing experiences for you during your long player/captain career? Well yeah, there is some stuff I could mention. One of them is recruiting Furyan, Martindale and Foppatofflan to Rusty Blades just before ECL 8. I did learn a lot from them as a player. Also, I have to mention something that I think is expected to be mentioned here. I had to let go of a player who is my best friend in real life. Heck, he is a godfather of my firstborn child, and he is the person who has had my back in the most difficult times in my life. I knew that it will hurt him to show him the door, I did feel like an ass then and still do. It was just something that had to happen. One for the team... What did I learn? Personal feelings, mine or any other individual's, do not matter a crap if you think about the team as a whole. This does not mean that I am going to act like an asshole to my teammates, no. I do believe that if you do good and be kind to those you are able to, it will make our world a tiny bit better, and even the tiniest little things matter. There's no point in putting someone down just because you can, that's just being a dick. Is there any NHL gaming related stuff you would like to change or that should be lifted up more often? This is an easy one. I want to see a spectator mode for the 6v6 broadcasts. Adjustable camera angles, other tunings and stuff. I also want to see a practise room for EASHL teams. Like a free skate mode, at least. I would like to see some love from EA towards the crown jewel of virtual hockey, 6v6 EASHL. I know it's not the moneymaker, at least not at the moment, but come on, it is by far the most interesting and potential game mode if you think about legit esports. How about your position? Why RD? I actually like playing any position, just not LD. Well I can play it, but it is just like using socks with sandals, it does not make any sense. RD is the position I have always ended up playing in every team I have played with since NHL 09, when EASHL first appeared in the game. After all these years you've been around - why still NHL? There's like dozens of better video games out there to play! I just love hockey. I want to play this game, and to be more precise, I want to play 6s. I just can't see myself not playing it, I have never even thought about it. So you're big daddy. You enjoy doing actual men's work with your hands etc., yet you're pretty decent on the virtual ice as well. Do you have some specific real life inspiration or where do you get the strength and the wisdom that still keeps you around among the whiny forever teenagers like we are? Like a role model? My father. He always does everything possible to make life better for those around him. I remember thinking as a teenager that if I will be half the man and father that my father is, I can call my life a success. And I did not make it easy for him back then, I was really difficult at that age. From him I picked up the mentality of hard work, the harder it gets the more it pays off. On-ice inspiration? It used to be Chris Pronger and The Big Buff, but now I could say that it is Victor Hedman. What does the future of NHL gaming bring to your mind? I hope that this 6 versus 6 scene can keep growing. Bigger broadcasts and a bigger audience watching them. As for NHLGamer, I hope that they can secure a stable long-term partnership so they can focus on running the leagues and growing the community. I think there is a lot of potential in team-based virtual hockey. Hockey might not be the biggest sport in the world, but it is exciting and fast, and people who like it are really passionate about it. The next step is to get followers who do not play the game. It is a challenge, yes – but I do see it as possible, I see it as likely. So you're old - how many seasons you have left in you and what do you want personally from the NHL gaming? In a nutshell: what do you want from ECL10 & the future of Roots? Oh, come on, I'm not that old, at least I don't really feel that I am old. I do joke about it yeah, but it is just talk. At the moment I see no end to playing. I love to get back on the ice night after night, and I am driven to get better as an individual and as a team player. I do think a lot about the game and how I am playing. It was not always like that, I used to play just for fun, although I did do my best on the ice, of course. But now I criticise myself as a player just to get better at the stuff where I am not at my best and to strengthen the areas that matter the most. But I will not forget the areas in which I am good already, I can still tweak those and be even better at defending, for example. I think I am a better player now than I was a year or two ago, for instance. And I will get better, age does not stop that. You can always get better if you are ready to admit that you are doing something wrong and are willing to really work on it. As for Roots in ECL 10, I think we have what it takes to be one of the "big boys". In ECL 9, we finished 4th in the regular season. I think we can and will achieve that again, but this time we want to do it in a way that leaves no question as to whether it belongs to us. Roots' future is bright. These guys are good already, and I trust their potential 100%. I trust that every one of us can and will be even better in the future. We're all hungry to improve, and we have the willingness to work for it. That is the essence of realising your potential. Let's end this one with a classic "TOP 3" question - who are the best RD's out there at this very moment? Willekunq and Loimmu are the obvious answers, there is no need to talk about them as everyone knows how damn good they are. I also like Ilmari. He has always been really good offensively, but I have noticed his defensive game improving a lot as well. He is not just an offensive tool anymore, he is strong in both ends of the ice. So he is the third. Tanski87 from an ex-teammate's and opponent's point of view? @MartindalexC: Mostly coming from ex-teammate since I never played much against him as a forward. Believe that when I went away from playing predominantly on LW was when Rusty were just starting to get 'going' so to speak. But as an ex-teammate (albeit for one season) I can only say good things about Tanski. He was always extremely reliable in game defensively, and didn't vary too much in his level. So in effect, it was very easy to play off of him since you would know with a great level of confidence what he would do in any given situation, something that should not be under-rated. Additionally, even though we disagreed on the exact tone, he would always try to keep people's spirits high in the party by making mention of things that we were doing well, as well things we could improve on. Furthermore, he would regularly put time in to watch back vods of games against teams, to try and give us some points to focus on and help us towards getting the win. The man needs to chill with his smoke breaks tho! Well that's about it. I hope now we all know little bit more about the T-guy. Five seasons of ECL Elite is behind him and hopefully we're going to witness atleast five more in the future, obviously with his beloved team, Roots. Gotta end this one saying that it was a pleasure to write this one for you guys. Til' next time, gamers! Spell check: no.

  14. NHLGamers, As expected, the teams predicted to finish at the top of the standings got off to a good start. Well, most of them anyway. Reigning champions Linköping HC (4-0-0) began their ECL 10 journey with a bit of a scare as their initial opponent, German powerhouse Brayce Phantoms, came back from a 3-0 deficit to tie the game and nearly took home the opening game in overtime. However, LHC’s designated goalscorer Paul @PleeMaker Arontie stepped up and made sure to secure the win. Lifted by the opening win, the team came out and secured a second one as well. Momentum is certainly a thing in hockey and judging by how LHC leveraged their opening wins into their second matchup versus one of their top competitors, it seems to be a thing in its virtual counterpart as well. Consensus top-4 team hReds didn’t know what hit them until it was too late as LHC, for lack of a better word, crushed the recent Pro champion to the tune of 7-0 and 5-1 wins. With 16 points each through the opening four games, PleeMaker (9+7) and partner-in-crime Erik @Eki Tammenpää (7+9) are right at the top of the leaderboards for player statistics. Sitting just above the LHC forwards, notorious HAVU duo Tuukka @FlyerKungen Kuha with 23 points (11+12) and Risto @Dominointi Järvi with 18 points (6+12). With stats like that, it’s no surprise really to learn HAVU Gaming also opened their season with a perfect record at 6-0-0. The foes vanquished were Vesa Pompa, Almost Famous and Unlucky Boys and the opening week included dominant wins of 8-0 (vs. aF) and 7-1 (vs. UB). Only three teams remain undefeated in the league (not counting Färjestad BK who have yet to open their season) with the third outside of LHC and HAVU being new esport signee JYP Jyvaskyla (4-0-0). Led by powerful left winger Kristian @kriketski17 Veijola and his 12 points (7+5), the team has defeated Unlucky Boys HC twice in overtime and GHETTO FIREBIRDS twice – one win coming in overtime. Even if the wins haven’t come with the dominance or flair one might have expected from JYP, opening the season with a perfect record can never be anything less than a good start. The fourth team among the “Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse”, hReds, hasn’t come out of the gates roaring like the other three. Disappointing losses to LHC aside, the team suffered overtime losses to SJ Gaming (3-4) and KOVA Esports (0-1) and have gone 2-2-2 to open their inaugural season in ECL Elite. Coincidentally, SJ Gaming (4-2-0) and KOVA Esports (3-1-0) are two of the teams to have the best openings beyond the unbeaten trio. Albeit early, Checkmate (2-0-2) also deserves a mention here as the points they collected was enough to put them in 6th with the first week completed. At the bottom of the standings we find Färjestad BK (yet to play), Luleå Hockey (0-1-1), Unlucky Boys (0-2-2) and Vesa Pompa HC (1-3-0). PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK In Thursdays matchup between Linköping HC and hREDS, @PleeMaker delivered this outstanding goal, which we name the performance of thew week. FORWARD OF THE WEEK Tuukka @FlyerKungen Kuha, HAVU Gaming With 11 goals, 12 assist and 23 points in just six games and a five-point lead clear of the second best skater, how could this go to anyone other than the captain of HAVU Gaming? FlyerKungen continues to cement his status as the premiere point-producer in EASHL 6v6 competition right now. Honorable mentions: Risto @Dominointi Järvi (HAVU), Erik @Eki Tammenpää (LHC), Paul @PleeMaker Arontie (LHC), Kristian @kriketski17 Veijola (JYP). DEFENDER OF THE WEEK Aleksi @loimmu Loimuvirta, Linköping HC No other defender has scored more than one goal thus far this season, whereas loimmu has already lit the lamp three times. Add five assists to that and you get a phenomenal start for a defender with 8 points (3+5) through 4 games. Honorable mentions: Wille @willekunq Juntunen (HAVU), Eemil @Eemil Koski (HAVU). GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK Alex @MonkeyHeadAF Falck, KOVA Esports Making his ECL Elite debut, MonkeyHeadAF hasn’t looked out of place at all. In fact, he’s been one of KOVA’s top performers as the team got off to a solid start (3-1-0) this season. With two shutouts, a save percentage of 87,5 % and 1,25 goals allowed per game, MonkeyHeadAF has certainly made his mark on the young season. Honorable mentions: Oskari @sibeelius Grönroos (JYP), Hannes @Hansulinho Kettunen (HAVU).

  17. On Tuesday, April 14th an issue in the NACL was brought to our attention regarding an illegal player on the roster for the Phantom. As accustomed, we gathered information and gave those involved an opportunity to present their side of the story before making a ruling. The issue: Phantoms played games with player @G lR ii M x (from here on out 'Grim') on defense, who is not listed on their NACL roster. Gathering of information When asked about it, Grim responded that he had been on their team all season. The Phantoms captain @Groulxz responded that the website (NHLGamer.com) is bad and does not work. According to the captain, Grim paid his share of the entry fee to team member ‘Heroic Duck’ and reasoned that he should be allowed to play. First, we took a look at the claim that he had been on the roster all season. By looking at the Phantoms roster, you can tell that was not the case. We also checked the team’s original sign-up post where they listed all of their members. Grim was not on this list. This is an important detail, because a week or so ago, the same issue came with player @Mxtayer who was not on the Phantoms roster. At that time, we did, however, find him on the original sign-up post showing the intent of having him on the roster, and we found an expired invitation for him to the team that was never accepted. We chalked it up to a user error due to unfamiliarity with the website, making sure he was added to the roster correctly and let it slide. In a similar situation in the ECL in Europe, the captain would have received a two-game suspension for this mistake. Next, we checked within the team invite history to see if a team invite was ever sent to Grim's account. We also checked Grim's user history to see when he last logged onto his NHLGamer account, thinking maybe he received the invite but never accepted it. These were possibilities that needed to be checked. Upon our research we saw the list of all players that were invited to the Phantoms roster - Grim was not one of the invited players. After checking Grim’s history, we discovered that - aside from the night of the violation - he hadn't logged on since March 2019. The user not logging on for over a year does not align with the claims of an issue with the website. Additionally, had Groulxz sent an invite to Grim (which was already proven false), it is his responsibility as a captain to follow up and remind all players to accept invites and make sure they are on the roster. No signs to support the claim of the website malfunctioning could be found, hence we find the claim false in regards to this case. If something was genuinely wrong with the website invite system, it is the player's/captain's responsibility to inform NHLGamer staff so we can be of assistance and fix any issue as soon as possible. The ruling Based on this evidence we are using rules 4.2, 6.1, 8.1 and 16.5 to assist with our ruling: The ruling is as follows: Both Phantoms vs Vertigo games will be overturned as wins for Vertigo, due to illegal use of player The first game of Phantoms vs 6th Sense will be ruled as a win for 6th Sense, due to illegal use of player The second game of Phantoms vs 6th Sense will be played as soon as possible on a mutually agreed date Player ‘Grim’ is ineligible to play this season as it is past the transfer deadline Phantoms captain ‘Groulxz’ receives a 2 game suspension for neglecting his duties as a captain on more than one occasion. The suspension will be served in the first game against the next opponent + the remaining game against 6th Sense. Failure to complete the season will result in a 12-month captaincy ban for Groulxz Failing to finish the season may impact all team members’ eligibility to participate in future seasons Final word We do not like issuing forfeits as we would always prefer to have everything settled on the ice. That being said the rules regarding roster eligibility were broken and we did not see any effort from the Phantoms captain to get the so-called 'site issue' resolved. We ask that the community respect and learn our rulebook to avoid future issues. Being a captain is demanding and if you haven't been one before, you might not realize that it can be very taxing to build a team, communicate with the 6+ members, agree on game times with the opponents and so on. After all, this is often done in addition to our everyday life. We ask every community member to keep that in mind when your captain asks you for availability or other information; replying is easy - chasing 6+ people isn't always that. We also want to bring up the importance of sharing the workload between the captain and the two assistants. Delegating different tasks is the key to keep things running smoothly and keeping things fun. And even if you're not a captain - why not ask your captain if you could help out with something. The article has been edited: Corrected how the serving of the suspension will be handled in point 5 of the rulings.

  20. NHLGamers, We asked ten team captains or alternates to tell us about their roster and ambitions for this second iteration of ECL Neo. In order to guarantee maximum objectivity we specify that these ten teams were chosen randomly, even Cancun Pirates, it’s promised ;). In a Neo division of 84 teams spread across 9 groups, we wanted to give the word to the teams in order to present themselves. This very succinct presentation will be followed, in a few weeks, to a more in-depth approach once the first games have delivered their verdict. Varissuon Toverit with @Kimiz1993 How did you compose your team? “We have known each other for a long time and have played a lot of games together - now we are here.” What is your game philosophy? “Just play and don’t complain.” What is your main strength? “Our main strength is MO-DO - Gema Tanzen, it’s a song” What is your main weakness? “Our mental strength after losing a game.” What are your ambitions for this season? “We want to proceed to the playoffs.” Redlight Jokers with @Steve How did you compose your team? “After the GCL season, we had a little break. Some guys decided to join other teams, so we had to look for new members. At first, it wasn't easy but at least we can say that we found some great players with a good personality and who can play more positions. We first thought that we didn’t have enough defensemen, but managed to sort out the situation. Our goalie @Christoph Kugler decided to go to Puck Panthers, but luckily he returned to us before the season. We think that we can be competitive for the new season.” What is your game philosophy? “We are Jokers, we want to have fun on the ice and to break some bones by laying heavy hits, LOL. Well seriously, attack wins games but defense wins championships, so we will stay good at D, take our chances on attack in different ways, not only with the same scheme. We are good for some strange and crazy action on the ice. We are not afraid to play against great opponents, because we want to develop our game, step by step. We just want fair games and to have fun.”” What is your main strength? “Our team spirit, we will never give up even if there is a big difference on the scoreboard. We have some talented players who can make a difference, goalscorers, playmakers and some weapons on the ice. All of us have a good mentality, that can push the other player in case of a bad situation. We are so glad that Kuglach is back in the net, because he performed incredibly during the GCL season. One Joker for all, all for one Joker!” What is your main weakness? “If we get a powerplay situation, we are too hectic and we do not play enough to move the opponent in the slot to find the free spaces. On breakaways we look for nice goals too often. A simple goal is too easy for a Joker LOL. In some situations, we play too slow or have too much of a big space between the attacker and defender. But mistakes are a part of the game and we will fight us back. If we have a big lead, our concentration can be lost.” What are your ambitions for this season? “First of all, we want to have a good start for the season, with great games and no troubles. Our goal is to qualify for the playoffs. We have a good team and we think we have a good chance to punch that ticket. We must fight/play as a team. Our second goal is staying tight on defense, which was our big problem in the past. Finally, we wish all teams good and fair games, but as Jokers we have always a trick in our pocket, LOL.” Cancun Pirates with @IsaaDePo How did you compose your team? “To be honest, it started as a joke because we were not supposed to join this ECL and finally with the quarantine, it became something serious. Our team is mainly composed of guys that played for Cancun Pirates during ECL 6 and we added some new faces, two of them will play their very first ECL.” What is your game philosophy? “Tripping penalties and shooting straight on the opponents goalie, mainly. To be serious, we only focus on having fun together, between a bunch of good and long time friends.” What is your main strength? “Having a member of NHLGamer’s staff on our team… And also the great atmosphere that prevails in our group. We really don’t care about winning or losing, except @Steve Yzerman, our captain…” What is your main weakness? “We have so many weaknesses, if not we would play in Elite like our good friends GHETTO FIREBIRDS who were in the same group as us during ECL 6. Well, to be honest we can lose our concentration very fast and very often.” What are your ambitions for this season? “Nothing but having fun, about the results and standings - we don’t care at all. And we will cheer for our buddies Hawks Olympique HC and Grenoble BDL Esport, the two other French teams in ECL 10.” Masiina with @joujami How did you compose your team? “We are all friends IRL.” What is your game philosophy? “We focus on icing a good defense and striking hard on offense.” What is your main strength? “Our defense, definitely.” What is your main weakness? “We need to be better at converting on our scoring opportunities.” What are your ambitions for this season? “We want to qualify for the playoffs.” Black Ice Guards with @miitu87 How did you compose your team? “Voiko nää kysymykset saada suomeksi LOL” What is your game philosophy? “We try to make the guys better players for solo and team play, while having fun, keeping a good atmosphere and helping those of us who never played in the ECL.” What is your main strength? “Our team as group, mainly. I’m so proud of all the guys in my team.” What is your main fault? “Well, my weakness is that I have no idea of what I have to do as a team captain and to handle the whole tournament things, LOL.” (check out this post for advice!) What are your ambitions for this season? “Making my team a friendly and lovely family, and if possible, join the playoffs.” Good Fellas with @Nemli-SVK How did you compose your team? “I had problems with my previous team so I decided to put some good guys together and I’m happy with this new team.” What is your game philosophy? “Be smarter than our opponent.” What is your main strength? “We always try our best to have fun together.” What is your main weakness? “Mainly letting out focus slip and also some bad days sometimes.” What are your ambitions for this season? “We want to be smart and win against rival teams.” Maximum Effect with @feertiiga How did you compose your team? “I just decided to create a team and a lot of my friends wanted to join in.” What is your game philosophy? “To just have fun while playing and keeping a good mood.” What is your main asset? “We have fun while playing and we also have fun while losing.” What is your main weakness? “We are not good at keeping a good overview of the game.” What are your ambitions for this season? “We wan’t to be as high as possible in the standings.” Bauer Rangers GmbH with @SirScheissa1ot How did you compose your team? “We wanted to rebuild something with some good friends.” What is your game philosophy? “Stay strong at defense and work hard at the offense, LOL” What is your main strength? “As a new team, we had very successful times, we reached the playoffs in the ECL9 Neo and the GCL5 Div2. We‘re working hard, playing a lot together and trying to keep improving.” What is your main weakness? “When we are challenged like what happened for us in the GCL, we‘re sometimes playing low-skill hockey.” What are your ambitions for this season? “Our ambitions should be to reach the maximum of ourselves. But the ECL can be very tricky because of the new teams joining. We are one of them, but we‘re thinking the playoffs can be possible.” Fearless Knights with @CzE Toni & @Zimowski95 How did you compose your team? “We have carefully considered and put our team together. So that our boys personalities mesh well in the locker room, but we also need to be a team where you can play at a very high level.” What is your game philosophy? “Forcing our opponents on our playing style and then punishing their mistakes mercilessly.” What is your main strength? "Our team is extremely strong in character and fights to the end. Therefore, it is possible for us to overturn even a high goal differential." What is your main weakness? “Our main weakness is that we don't have one.” What are your ambitions for this season? “Take it game by game and get into the playoffs. From the playoffs everything is possible.” NHL4You Gaming with @Hohner How did you compose your team? “When @Tornado.hr and me met one evening at the party to play we had the idea to build a team together. The name was also quickly found "NHL4you Gaming" NHL4you is our 1vs1 league and under their name we will start our journey. We asked some players from our old clubs as well as some friends and so we put our team together.” What is your game philosophy? “Never give up and keep on fighting.” What is your main strength? “Our main strength is that nobody knows us.” What is your main fault? “We are a new team and not yet so well established - it will take some time.” What are your ambitions for this season? “We want to reach the semi-finals of ECL Neo with this squad of experienced Lite and Pro players.” There you go! We wanted to give the reigns of this article to the captains themselves and hopefully you have now become a bit more acquainted with some of the teams that are battling through our Neo division this season. Remember guys, play hard - have fun!
