NHL 19 Beta - We want your feedback!

    betafeedback.png

Last week EA SPORTS released the most wanted thing of the summer by releasing the NHL19 Open Beta. There had been a lot of talk around the web on whether it would come out or not, but it eventually did and the first impressions around the community have been very positive. The new skating mechanics looks and feels amazing and the feedback especially around 6vs6 has been mostly very great. This is of course a beta and a lot of improvements are still to be made. As one of the biggest NHL gaming sites in the world - not to mention the amazing talent and passion of our community members - we want to help out.

So here's the deal: We want to hear what you guys think, so we can forward it to EA SPORTS in a well structured and articulated way. We hope you take some time and write about your experiences (both the good and the bad) and possible issues and solutions that you have run into and hopefully this will help us all get the greatest NHL version yet!

You may write your feedback in any format you want, but we have included the below structure, as presented by EA SPORTS NHL Community Manager Tyler Horsfall on Twitter.

    1. NHL Ones
    2. NHL THREES Drop-In (Arcade Threes)
    3. EASHL Drop-Ins (Please specify if it is in 3s/6s/both)
    4. EASHL Club 3s
    5. EASHL Club 6s
    6. AI skaters in World of Chel (specify mode + how many AI)
    7. AI goalies in World of Chel (specify mode)
    8. AI goalies in EASHL (specify if in 3s/6s)
    9. Customization: Player Classes + Traits/Specializations
    10. Customization: Gear (Casual + Pro gear + Gear Bags)
    11. Other World of Chel related feedback
    12. Online Vs.
    13. AI Skaters in Online Vs.
    14. AI Goalies in Online Vs.
    15. Skating
    16. Hitting (Collision Physics)
    17. Pokechecking
    18. Offensive Play (i.e. how did it feel to play defense? How easy was it? Was there a skill gap? Were there limitations?)
    19. Defensive Play (i.e. how did it feel to play defense? How easy was it? Was there a skill gap? Were there limitations?)
    20. Other (anything not covered here)
    21. Human Goalies in EASHL

We would prefer your thoughts in English, as it will make the process quicker and make for a better discussion here in the community, as all can participate. However, we know there are those who can express themselves better in their maternal language, so for this purpose, we have made this topic discussable in some more languages in their specific topics:

Thanks to @chavelski, @gzell60, @MAYZIIX and @Janikka for the help and translations!

Dont care anything else than 6vs6 games n in this mode EA make good job, first if all developers never get anything else than shit in their Neck so i want say BIG THAnK U for those changes what they make on this version:

    - now it feels u can move like jagger not any cargo ship like before, it makes it fun to play

    - do not change poke check or l1 now u can use UR skill stick n handle the puck with stick

    - also different player builds with possible to peak them little bit how u like is BIG plus, so player feels he/she can make players attribute going with playstyle

I realize its called nhl19beta for a reason but feels more like its nhl19alpha but anyway developers are going to right direction on gameplay n this feels much more compative than previous version, but servers are totally shitty no they are deep in hole Where sun never shines...well u get the point, if servers n connection problems can be solved this version will be best evööö...

I don't know if the timer after the game ends is planed to be only in beta but it shoudn't be in the actual game. There will be hurry to take stats etc to ECL if you have limited time to do it. And it's nice that you can take your time at action tracker and/or instant replay.

Otherwise to EA: Well done! Great game and don't change a thing.. well matchmaking and crashing obviously but the gameplay is perfect.

    20. Other: I don't know if this intends to stay the same, but this year the speed of getting from one match to the next is worse than last year because after each game you get kicked out of the dressing room completely (and that's even with no errors, desyncs, bugs, glitches, blue screens). Would like to see them copy from FIFA pro clubs and make it so you can search for your next match right after finishing a game. Also, a quick swap handedness button in the match room would be good for those of us that don't choose one specific position.

Since this is being passed on to EA, here's a couple more small things:

    • The animation when you pass to a guy who is close to the offside line and he skates in before the puck and gets called offside (in versus).
    • Quick, instant and responsive menus like we haven't seen since last gen (when pressing "Advance/Back" or using the d-pad to move left/right/up/down)
    • Forehand stick lift face-off sometimes doesn't work, puck stays on the dot even though you've won the faceoff.
    • Drop-ins often got confusing when both teams' jackets/jerseys had similar colours.
    • New drop-in select position system is an improvement, but there are many players that play weird positions like only RD and C. What I would suggest is just having the six position options there and you highlight which ones you prefer to play.
    • In Ones I experienced a bug a few times where the overlay that shows the players' names and one stat (X goals, Y hits, Z wins, first game, etc) would stay there for the entire match.
    • Skating backwards with the puck into the offensive zone should be an offside.sorry everybody looks like I dont know hockey rules
    • Search for clubs with friends option was broken again.
    • Player who got a penalty came out of the bench not the box after the PK was over.
    • (Personal opinion) The player who controls the goalie should come on as the 6th player instead of a bot.

Gameplay feels really good. At this point I don't really see what major thing they could add in next year that would greatly improve the game. *cough* GM connected *cough*

    - Matchmaking and game crashing issues need to be fixed at EASHL.

    - Need to fix the pokechecks. Maybe not as overwhelming it was in NHL 18, but like it won’t aim for the opponents legs all the time.

    - Make sure the EASHL has ”challenge club” feature.

    - Remove the clock counter at the end of the match to make it easier to take stats from ECL games. (Maybe only in EASHL challenge club mode.)

    - Add a feature to put ”C” and ”A” captain patches to EASHL jerseys.

Overall I think it’s the best NHL yet made! Gameplay and skating feels dope.

I'm probably going to play every mode this game has, but prefer club 6vs6 and hut/versus. I hope this has some effect because I used too much of my freetime to answer :D.

    1. NHL Ones
    - Favors big hitting players too much. Even though It's not a problem if you always pick a big guy :P. Maybe nerf tackling in this gamemode or give more balance to everyone.I was also thinking about the possibility of raising the rink's walls so you can bind to the wall and avoid check from behind?

    2. NHL THREES Drop-In (Arcade Threes)
    - I think it's ok because its arcade. Won't play it tho cos I don't like it.

    3. EASHL Drop-Ins (Please specify if it is in 3s/6s/both)
    - 6vs6: I find it really hard to recognize who's in my team because of the custom clothing. Especially when player leaves and AI players has not sign on his head. All of the home clothing should be dark as possible and away white as possible. Ban grey plz.
    - 3vs3: Clothing is ok because of less players. Even though It should always be easy to recognize your own teammates.
    - Both: Fix the connecting problems (also in club games)

    4. EASHL Club 3s
    - It's fun as it was in NHL 18

    5  EASHL Club 6s
    - Nerfing pokecheck and boosting skating has made better players even better. I like it (tho im not that good myself so won't benefit me hehehehe :'[ ). The scale between bad and good teams is going to be even larger, but it forces everyone to focus on teamplay in both directions which is good. Just like in real hockey.
    - Why is there timelimits in the menu after the match? Where is the summary of the players like takeaways/giveaways, shot% etc.?
    - There should be challenge club room (of course?)
    - No input lag is a big +, I hope it stays that way in the full version aswell.
    - I would love to see who carries C and A in the teams.
    - There should be possibilty to change your team shirt away/home/third to avoid same colours as your opponent.

    6. AI skaters in World of Chel (specify mode + how many AI)
    - AI defenders always have problems when the puck is behind the own goal and they decide to take it up. They skate near the post and puck goes under the keeper, sometimes it bounces inside the goal. This was the problem in NHL 18 aswell.
    - Sometimes AI won't pass in beta. I understand this when the line isn't open and pass would be a suicide, but this happens in clear lines aswell. This worked fine in the NHL 18.

    7. AI goalies in World of Chel (specify mode)
    - Boost Ones keeper a bit. Not too much. Their should be able to catch the pucks when the shot are taken from far (sometimes from backwall).

    8. AI goalies in EASHL (specify if in 3s/6s)
    - I like that AI keeper takes sweet saves from onetimers sometimes now. Imo AI keeper has always been good enough. Some of the glitch goals that are still working are annoying but I believe its really hard to erase them without making goalies too good?

    9. Customization: Player Classes + Traits/Specializations
    - Traits are cool, not too overpowered and same for everyone. Don't make them like perks in Call of Duty, because it ruined the whole franchise.

    10. Customization: Gear (Casual + Pro gear + Gear Bags)
    - Wish the head customization would be like in Fifa. Would be cool to have option to choose the stiffnes of your stick and the curve of your blade that would affect your stats a bit. I think this was in some older version?
    - Otherwise I think its OK

    11. Other World of Chel related feedback
    - Please make a practise mode where you can go play alone, with AI or your EASHL teammates.

    12.13.and14. Online Vs.
    - No huge changes needed. Just try to fix the known glitches.

    15. Skating
    - Very good. As I said earlier, good players will dominate with their skills. Defenders need to focus on cutting skating and passing lanes. Somehow the energy isn't gathering when sliding backwards?
    - Imo enforcers should have worse skating ratings, because most of the real life enforcers can't even get to the NHL because they're so useless.

    16. Hitting (Collision Physics)
    - It has some assistance now, but you can still avoid it. I think it's wise to tackle now because you can collapse opponents energy levels which can give your team benefits. In the NHL 18 it just felt good to hit someone.
    - Sometimes when you hit a player, he flies to his teammate and hit him. It's an interference penalty to original tackler. Shouldn't be? Right?

    17. Pokechecking
    - I love the end of the pokechecking era. Please don't buff it, let it be like it is. But tune down its change to trip the player, most of the pokes should just miss everything. Poke from behind or straight to the legs from odd angle should always be a penalty.

    18. Offensive Play (i.e. how did it feel to play defense? How easy was it? Was there a skill gap? Were there limitations?)
    - It's easier to attack. Penalties that the pokecheck is giving is making the defending team to play more passive.

    19. Defensive Play (i.e. how did it feel to play defense? How easy was it? Was there a skill gap? Were there limitations?)
    - It's harder to defend. But with the right positioning it's easy to cut passing lanes and block shots.

    20. Other (anything not covered here)
    - I wish the deekes you added to NHL 18 could be made in the EASHL aswell. Imo every spec should have the ability to make deekes. In beta I realised you can't make datsyuk deek in penalty shot because its ''illegal'' according to referees. I played as a playmaker. Most of the deeks fail because of the poor deeking ability? Not cool, because I believe even John Scott can make between the legs deek if he wants.
    - Why is the old timer animation so fast? I also hate the glitch behind the goal where you fakeshot and make oldtimer right after. It makes the oldtimer animation to go double speed and looks fake as hell. Edgy human goalie doens't have the speed to react even if he understand its going to happen.

    21. Human Goalies in EASHL
    - I haven't played goalie, but It's clear to see that they're still too edgy to handle and move slowly from post to post. Especially in the penalty shot or breakaway it's like taking a penalty in FIFA. If the game is heading to be legit eSports this is definitely something to be focused on.

    Peace.

Skating is great and pokecheck is like it should be. Deflections should be nerfed, and intercepting passes should be changed a bit, as sometimes when you are facing the puck a pass might just go through your player, whereas when you are not facing the puck your player might still be able to intercept the pass, which should not be the case.

This game has potential to be an amazing game with a couple of fixes imo.

    1. NHL Ones
      +
This mode is a fun distraction where I can work on my 1v1 skills.
    2. NHL THREES Drop-In (Arcade Threes)
    3. EASHL Drop-Ins (Please specify if it is in 3s/6s/both)
      +
Being able to lock positions before searching.
      -
Hard to keep track of teammates and opponents because of the individual jerseys.
I think it would be better to have 3v3 and 6v6 in the same lobby since it adds another level of the slow menus.
    4. EASHL Club 3s
    5. EASHL Club 6s
      +
Big thanks for moving player summary and level progression to a quicker menu after the match is over.
      -

Club challenge is missing, I'm assuming it is back with the full release.
      The timer after a game.
    6. AI skaters in World of Chel (specify mode + how many AI)
    7. AI goalies in World of Chel (specify mode)
      -
Goalie AI is weird. (NHL Ones)
    8. AI goalies in EASHL (specify if in 3s/6s)
    9. Customization: Player Classes + Traits/Specializations
      +
This is a step in the right direction, keep it but do not make it ridiculous.

      -
Why do I need two loadouts prepared for switching between RW/LW/C/RD/LD? I want an option to set if my player shoots left or right depending on the position I'm playing.
    10. Customization: Gear (Casual + Pro gear + Gear Bags)
      -
Please do not make us suffer through the "daily login bonus hockey bag" menu that plagued HUT in 18.
Manually opening several hockey bags with the slow animations and several menu choices is a waste of time.
    11. Other World of Chel related feedback
      -
Obvious bugs and crashes that should already be addressed by others.
    12. Online Vs.
    13. AI Skaters in Online Vs.
    14. AI Goalies in Online Vs.
    15. Skating
      +
Finally, I can be in control of where my player is on the ice. The downside is that so can others :)
I love the stamina bar, it reveals the game mechanics for everyone.
    16. Hitting (Collision Physics)
      +
It feels much better than 18.
    17. Pokechecking
      +
I love the change, I have to think twice before using it now.
      -

I hate that I cannot control where the stick goes the first instant when I'm pressing R1. When I want to block my opponent from making a deke when I'm behind him it results in a penalty because of the stick going towards the puck before moving to where I'm aiming.
    18. Offensive Play (i.e. how did it feel to play defense? How easy was it? Was there a skill gap? Were there limitations?)
      +
Creating space is easier for skilled players.
Finally deflections are not stopping the puck completely as in 18.
    19. Defensive Play (i.e. how did it feel to play defense? How easy was it? Was there a skill gap? Were there limitations?)
      +
Closing the gap to the puck carrier is easier for skilled players.
    20. Other (anything not covered here)
      -
Too many and too slow menus, it takes forever to navigate.
Give me an option to choose an even smaller game clock and change its position.
Did faceoffs get changed? I lose when I think I'm countering the opponents faceoff, seems like it is more random or the mechanics are changed.
    21. Human Goalies in EASHL
Positive: Locking to the posts and moving away from the posts appears to be quicker, this makes it easier to save wraps.

Not so much about the Beta but you can address to EA Sports to fix real jerseys for the SHL and Hockeyallsvenskan teams with commercial signs on the jerseys. And they can also fix the real arenas in SHL. If they can have the correct arenas in the NLA (swiss league) they should be able to have it in the swedish leagues aswell. It couldnt be that hard to create for example Hovet in Stockholm. And they should also take away the stupid thing that you only can change club to a CHL (Canadian Hockey League)-team for minor players. As it is today, you cant perform a transfer for a minor player that goes between two swedish clubs just to take one example.

Regarding the Beta. It shouldn't take 45 min (real time) to play a game because of there are so many penalties in the game. Shorten the cut scenes aswell and when you play online, fix so the opponent only can watch one replay of a goal and then go to face-off.

Stick lift is way too effective. Pokechecks are useless. They need to balance it better. I like that you cant spam the poke. I dislike that even a good poke is a risk not worth taking. All pokes done from behind should result in a tripping while doing it in front (with a certain gap) should result in success or a failed poke but not an automatic tripping. The image I attached got me a tripping penalty. Its not the best exemple cause throwing a poke in that situation should probably get you a penalty but the problem is that my stick is nowhere near the fwds skates.

other than that, all is great and skating etc feels awesome and I’m really looking forward to the release.

    Tech issue:

This screen stuck with me after I paused the game to switch controllers. It was completely unplayable and I ended up losing the game. Since the X-button has a function in this screen, I couldnt use it for the gameplay. Rest of the buttons worked.

    1. NHL Ones: The goalies should be a bit better + the mode favours big players too much imo

    2. NHL THREES Drop-In (Arcade Threes): Didn't play

    3. EASHL Drop-Ins (Please specify if it is in 3s/6s/both): Idk how I feel about the clothes

    4. EASHL Club 3s: It's okay... Penalties should result in 3v2 powerplays etc. instead of penalty shots and the games shouldn't last as long as 6v6

    5. EASHL Club 6s: Pretty perfect, gameplay is smooooth. Wait time in the matchup screen is far too long (probably unintentionally) when the players don't ready up. Why isn't action tracker available after the game? Exiting the game before the wait time is over leads to you having to re-enter the dr which is ridiculous

    6. AI skaters in World of Chel (specify mode + how many AI): Why do they have different colored helmets lol

    7. AI goalies in World of Chel (specify mode): I feel like goalies in ones aren't good enough

    8. AI goalies in EASHL (specify if in 3s/6s): Feels terrible to play against as always, had to play vs one in 3s due to the opponent's goalie supposedly crashing while loading the game

    9. Customization: Player Classes + Traits/Specializations: Feels good that you can really have variation in classes and traits etc

    10. Customization: Gear (Casual + Pro gear + Gear Bags): Hockey bags are a great idea and work well, there's lots of cool customization options too. If you put a jersey on your guy you can't take it off, which results in for example your hoodie being under the jersey even if you'd want the jersey off and the hoodie to be shown. I love that you have the same customization for every position now

    11. Other World of Chel related feedback: All the button presses needed to get through the menus to the 6v6 dr is a bit too much

    12. Online Vs.: Let us save our lines and strategies, every time you for example want to go look at the leaderboards you need to do your lines and strats all over again. The games last too long (probably pretty much only due to the learning curve with the poke check nerf). Playing against Edmonton Oilers at their home arena is pretty hard, because at least when using overhead the media cube blocks most of the offensive zone (don't know how I managed to win that game lol)

    13. AI Skaters in Online Vs.: This is pretty broad but sometimes they do stuff that's really stupid :D

    14. AI Goalies in Online Vs.: I still don't understand how some shots are going in.. Mostly talking about straight shots that should be pretty easy saves for the goalie but it still goes in

    15. Skating: Really smooth I love it don't change it plz. New stamina is great too

    16. Hitting (Collision Physics): Hip checking isn't powerful enough imo (the player being hit doesn't react enough or at all), regular hits are good though

    17. Pokechecking: Have gotten multiple penalties from situations where the stick didn't hit or wasn't even near the player who got tripped, otherwise it's good. Also it feels like it doesn't matter what the situation is and how you are positioned, tapping R1 results in a penalty every time. This in turn leads to me only using the defensive skill stick for defending with the stick. This isn't necessarily a bad thing but I don't know how I feel about it

    18. Offensive Play (i.e. how did it feel to play defense? How easy was it? Was there a skill gap? Were there limitations?): No complaints, feels very nice especially with the new skating. Deflections are fixed from the mess that they were in NHL 18, don't know if they're too op tho

    19. Defensive Play (i.e. how did it feel to play defense? How easy was it? Was there a skill gap? Were there limitations?): It's harder with the nerfed poke and L1, which is good. It's good that there's a lot more hits than before in a game due to the nerfs too

    20. Other (anything not covered here): All the bugs, crashes etc. that everyone has told you about. Gameplay is very very very really smooth and I love it. Faceoffs are broken, don't think it's only due to the removal of the fake thing either, the mechanics seem really weird.

    21. Human Goalies in EASHL: Didn't have time to play g myself but heard that it feels nice (and faster). Playing vs human goalies as a skater feel good as well.

Probably forgot something and said something stupid but yea

To start with, I gotta say that this beta have been very good so far and I have enjoyed every second of it. There are som changes though that I would like to see.

    1. I want there to be an permanent dressing room like in last game. When you quit a game or back out you shouldn't get back to the starting menu of chel. In my opinion you should still be in the dressing room.

    2. After you have played a game it says "next game in 00:56" for example. I think you should remove the limited time you have after a game. After games I like to watch stats and also highlights. And highlights aren't even available to watch after the games anymore?? You need to bring that back. I think it would be cool if you could watch highlights and stats of the game even after you quit or close the application.

    3. Add a practice arena where you and your club members can go into anytime and practice together or alone as a goalie or skater. If alone as a goalie there should be a bot that can help you out.

    4. Fix the pokecheks a little bit but not much. A good poke shouldn't be avoided just because it might give you a penalty. Bad pokes though that goes through the skates should always be a penalty. Pokechecks through the net should be fixed.

    5. The stick lift can be nerfed a little bit but not too much.

    6. Sometimes when you skate towards another player and decides to go for the hit nothing happens and the skater can just keep on skating without even losing the control over the puck. In real life the player would lose control of the puck.

The rest I want changed have already been mentioned up here. This game is going to be amazing!

    2. After you have played a game it says "next game in 00:56" for example. I think you should remove the limited time you have after a game. After games I like to watch stats and also highlights. And highlights aren't even available to watch after the games anymore?? You need to bring that back. I think it would be cool if you could watch highlights and stats of the game even after you quit or close the application.

    ....

Just go into the instant replay and it will remove this countdown. As for the action tracker it has to be an oversight on behalf of the devs as it's available during the game under the game stats tab, for some reason though it's not there in the post game menus.

Keep the gameplay as it is in beta. No tweaks that makes it closer to previous version. Not again.

It's closer to perfection now that it has ever been.

Loving the beta and the 6v6 gameplay. The things that are bad are not really gameplay related. For example, when going in to a 6v6 game you shouldnt have to ready up two times? I know it’s always been like that but it’s just unnessecary and makes everything take more time. After the captain has pressed search for game, there shouldnt be any more buttonpressening. Just show the opponent and start the game :). Or make the timer max 30s and not 3 minutes. Look at fifa - you can play sooo many more games during 2hrs than you can play in NHL. Same with like shootout mode (rarely play that but still), you should be able to play a rematch against your opponent so you dont have to go back to main menu and search again.

Summary: make everything more fluent menu wise and we will have a great game! Dont change the pokes etc.

    hey all,

overall the nhl19 beta is solid!

just a few things that pop to mind... if your opponent is AFK for 5+ mins then the game should end and you get the W.  in ones, try to implement something to prevent players teaming up to make it a 2 v 1 scenario.  custom cameras would be nice like in old gen [adjusting angle / distance].

    p.s. can't wait until nhl19 comes out!

Overall I love the game, haven't been this excited over any game in while. Poke check is great and as a guy who mainly plays d in eashl and HUT while playing with my friends this is such a welcomed addition. To casual players in may be harder to learn to actually aim your pokes and choose the right timing but not only does it improve the overal experience in the game it also makes it more competable, where you'll have to learn to defend instead of spamming the poke check. Physical play is great. Also I like that you don't get really good shots when your player is in a akward position and it has an effects on the quality of the shot. I like that d-men need to give good opening passes or first passes and it's a little harder to do than in previous nhl games. Itercepting passes works pretty good and using that poke to correctly aim at the passing lanes, it makes a big difference. In Chel the traits a nice addition, I like that you can have a little customization to the build of your player, the weight and height and have a small boost in certain areas as well. It's all good. I actually went berserk and bought the most expensive edition of nhl which I haven't done ever and really looking forward playing the HUT mode and also be able to see how well does the skill zone playing work for those who use it. Hopefully the new system will force those players to actually play for themselves instead of always relying on their cpu to do the job.

Just to sum this up, last NHL was too arcade style for me to enjoy the game, I love when there are multiple ways of scoring and playing instead of trying to always exceed in a certain way or doing the same goal over and over and over again. I love watching hockey and this is the most realistic hockey game thus far. I hope you guys do not listen too much for the crying about the poke check, I haven't noticed getting undeserved penalties and I've played the BETA a lot! Lack of self criticism is all I can say to the ones who are "getting too much penalties" or saying that "I extend my stick and the opponents dangles himself to the stick to cause penalties", if you've ever watched hockey it doesn't take much for a guy to get tripped. You have to take care of your stick, it's a basic rule in hockey.

    1. NHL Ones: Nice arcade hockey. Great addition!
    2. NHL THREES Drop-In (Arcade Threes): Great way to bring this game mode more alive. It was quite forgotten game mode for me last year. Even though it was nice variety for so serious 6v6s, playing alone against one opponent and two AIs wasn't very tempting in the long-run. Now I might even play this around the year.
    3. EASHL Club 6s: It's pretty much just the way it should be. Deflections could be tuned down a bit, but other than that it seems to be the best 6v6 so far.
    4. Customization: Player Classes + Traits/Specializations: This is really balanced and a nice addition. I was pretty sceptic about the feature when I heard about it, as I was worried it would result into unbalanced and overpowered builds just like last-gen NHL games had, but this works really well.
    5. Customization: Gear (Casual + Pro gear + Gear Bags): Not something I would extremely pay attention to, but it's fun to have more equipment and more personalized characters in the game. Some of the equipment is pretty goofy, but that's fine. If there's something I'd hope EA would add, it would be editable goalie masks: possibility to edit the color of the helmet and the grill, edit the surface type/material (matte - glossy), and maybe add some logos etc. on the helmet (why not text as well, assuming it goes through profanity filter). I'm still waiting for a chance to wear matte black helmet ;)
    6. Human Goalies in EASHL: Feels great! Finally the goalie feel responsive and doesn't get stuck into animations as much as it used to.
