NHL 20 Beta - We want your feedback!

Yesterday EA SPORTS released the most wanted thing of the summer by releasing the NHL 20 Open Beta. As always, there had been a lot of talk and rumours around the web on whether it would come out or not, but it eventually did and the first impressions around the community - especially after having been presented with a list of improvements since the beta - have been cautiously positive. The tuning to the left trigger, the new animations to the goalies and the revamped shooting especially around the 6vs6 game mode has been mostly received well. But it's still early on and we've barely scratched the surface. This is of course a beta and a lot of improvements are still to be made. As one of the biggest NHL gaming sites in the world - not to mention the amazing talent and passion of our community members - we want to help out.

    NHL_20_Beta_feedback.jpg

So here's the deal: We want to hear what you guys think, so we can forward it to the producers and developers at EA SPORTS in a well structured and articulated way. We hope you take some time and write about your experiences (both the good and the bad) and possible issues and solutions that you have run into and hopefully this will help us all get the greatest NHL version yet! In the case of reporting bugs, we also hope that you include screenshots or short video clips to explain them better. Even if someone else already posted the same bug - it might be worth getting a 2nd or 3rd example of it and perhaps from another angle.

Please note that the official EA Answers HQ forum is also live and taking feedback and that is the official way of providing feedback of the beta. You can find it by clicking this text.

We here at NHLGamer want to discuss these things as a group and compile the feedback and bugs to the developers in an easy to chew form. You may write your feedback in any format you want, but we have included the below structure, edited from last years version.

    1. NHL Ones
    2. NHL THREES Drop-In (Arcade Threes)
    3. EASHL Drop-Ins (Please specify if it is in 3s/6s/both)
    4. EASHL Club 3s
    5. EASHL Club 6s
    6. AI skaters in World of Chel (specify mode + how many AI)
    7. AI goalies in World of Chel (specify mode)
    8. AI goalies in EASHL (specify if in 3s/6s)
    9. Customization: Player Classes + Traits/Specializations
    10. Customization: Gear (Casual + Pro gear + Gear Bags)
    11. Other World of Chel related feedback
    12. Online Vs.
    13. AI Skaters in Online Vs.
    14. AI Goalies in Online Vs.
    15. Skating
    16. Hitting (Collision Physics)
    17. Pokechecking
    18. Shooting
    19. Offensive Play (i.e. how did it feel to play offense? How easy was it? Was there a skill gap? Were there limitations?)
    20. Defensive Play (i.e. how did it feel to play defense? How easy was it? Was there a skill gap? Were there limitations?)
    21. Human Goalies in EASHL
    22. The new presentation and scoreboard (if you're having problems with it, let us know if you did the configuration properly when starting the beta for the first time)
    23. Other (anything not covered here)

We would prefer your thoughts in English, as it will make the process quicker and make for a better discussion here in the community, as all can participate. However, we know there are those who can express themselves better in their maternal language, so for this purpose, we have made this topic discussable in some more languages in their specific topics:

Played a couple of games as a D-man in 6s. Hitting felt borderline useless - it was hard to hit with the heat-seeking hitting mechanic and when one landed, nothing seemed to happen. Had to take a lot of speed and hit straight on to strip the puck.

Saucer passes were very hard to intercept. I have a feeling saucers will  pretty much replace regular passes as there didn't seem to be much downside to them - referring mostly to picking up the pass. Not saying it's a bad thing, just an observation.

Goalies seemed to be in a lot of trouble, especially when there was a scrum in front of the net and the puck was loose somewhere under or near the goalie.

Spending so much time on watching compulsory replays wasn't fun. Especially as we were getting thrashed. :D

    1. hangs in the player's editor. 2. freezes after opening the bags. 3. Purely by goalkeepers, how to cover the puck now? the player simply sits in the butterfly

    EASHL 6vs6

Boost goalies. Especially near post wtf? Tho I like that some of the direct shots go in now.

-For some reason dressing room wont update in real time. You have to hit unready->ready to refresh and see that everyones is rdy or editing build etc.

-Sometimes when editing build/opening bags in the dressing room and returning back to the room, you see only blank boxes and cant leave room or push ready. This is fixed when the room leader leaves the dressingroom.

-when the intermission is on, there's something wrong with the audience voice settings. Its like 20 mental patients are shouting.

    - there should be an option to skip "play of the period" highlight. (long x push for example)

    - why is the scoreboard flashing when the powerplay is on or penalty coming 🙄. Maybe give option to make it stable.

Theres lots of positive things. I like that the gamespeed feels faster now, play is more direct like in real nhl hockey and passes are better when u get to used to it. Shooting animations are working well and you cant pump speed with L2. Only thing im really worried about is the goalies. Otherwise it's fun to play. Hope they won't change it too much 😊

Am I the only one who thinks passing is kinda random? Especially as defender I've missed several passes where I'm under 0 pressure and puck receiver is 100% open but my pass misses him by a mile... Or then it's just me being bad...

The scoreboard.. The rebounds from goalies of a shot from middle zone for example.. Back skate faster than McDavid skates forward..

Liikaa katkoja, kiekko koko aika katsomossa tai mv sulkee lopullisesti. Syöttöjen voimakkuutta pitäisi pystyä kontrolloimaan enemmän. Uudet laukaukset tosi hyviä! Pelikelloa ei huomaa uudessa paikassa. EASHL liian vähämaalista.

Passing feels different, I like it.

I played the beta for the first time yesterday, i made 5-10 attempts with regular passes before resorting to saucers for the rest of the evening.

The regular passes feels broken tbh, i charged the pass button for 2 sec and the puck still left my stick like a slow curling rock. What is up with that?

Played a VS-game today and the passing is just as random there. Trying to breakout of the defensive zone with a regular pass resulted in a turnover more times than not.

    Is it just me?

A penalty should not be called when the puck is shot into the stands in your own defensive zone after being deflected off the back of the net.

    Why not?

Edit: Or do you mean that the puck deflects into the stands after you have accidentally shot on the back of your own net?

Yeah, the wording was a bit weird as I typed the message out in a rush. I mean the puck takes a deflection off the back of the net and goes into the stands.

Another thing: There's no reason for the build slots to require leveling up to be opened. The only thing it does is waste time when you want to change builds.

Edit: I'm talking about different loadouts.

Quite few ´own goals´ so far in 6v6, kinda awkward when the puck is bouncing in front of the net, more than fair chance you push it in yourself as a defensive player. The puck seems to be alive under the goalies equipment often - opposite teams guys poke the puck in for a goal. Still remember the good old days of NHL where that was a thing, not as fun (Not a goalie, so can´t say what it is, does the goalie need to do something now or why the puck is alive so often ´under´ the G?)

Please let this game be as it is!!!. Ofcourse its few things that can be fixed but last year when we had a beta that was really fun to play we complained so much that they fucked up the game instead.

Could you please make other defencemen playable than the smallest ones? Unable to tackle, lift stick or pokecheck. And remove holes of goalies chests? Onceagain, made only for attackers, and matches with 10+ goals a game easy. More buggygoals than ever. EASHL more unbalanced than ever. Yeas its pretty as young Crosby, but thats about most icehockey it gets.

    1. Same old. Tested it, but not my favourite.

    5. Regular passes to short distance are better than last year. Longer distance passes don`t correlate with the time you are pressing the R2. Saucer worked.  Half of the goals were bounces, from own player (bad pick-up animations) or just randoms.

    9. All the ”bigger D-man classes” were not as good. Twd was slow, bad agility even at the smallest build. Changing that to puck moving D did not change that much. Checking/hitting is difficult as a Dman. Going closer to opponent with a left stick and making the hit from the side often does not work, player hits bords. You had to be really precise with the hitting, and when you managed to hit, it did not necessarily lead to anything. Opponent just bumped and continued.   Poke was ok, but it is annoying when you hit the puck with a good poke and the puck bounces back to same opponent. In some positions you could also poke from behind, which sucks. More than half of the times one-timer did not work instantly. Also pass interception animations were a bit weard. F. Ex Since when you actually cut off a pass, when your back is towards the puck? Overall the gameplay felt like ”mailaviidakko”. Players I tried felt a bit clumsy. Now I think if you cover your goal front with your players, there is non pass coming through, at all. So if you just wait and be passive, no more nice one-timers. Vice versa, Good thing is no more L2 + X.
    10. I couldn’t care less.

    15. Skating N/A
    16. Hitting (Collision Physics), somehow easier than in 6vs6 with no AI.
    17. Pokechecking pretty much same as in 6vs6
    18. Shooting, pretty much same as in 6vs6
    19. Offensive Play (i.e. how did it feel to play offense? How easy was it? Was there a skill gap? Were there limitations?) N/A
    20. Defensive Play (i.e. how did it feel to play defense? How easy was it? Was there a skill gap? Were there limitations?) N/A, regarding eashl, read para 9 and 23.
    21. Human Goalies in EASHL..N/A
    22. The new presentation and scoreboard (if you're having problems with it, let us know if you did the configuration properly when starting the beta for the first time) scoreboard location...and it`s blinking.....bad.
    23. Other (anything not covered here) liked beta 19 much more than this. I’m not Elite-level, but not X- or poke spammer either. Somehow it felt useless as a D-man to try to be active in own end with hitting and stuff. Passive Area defence seemed to be better alternative. And It felt partly like you are basically ”trying to run with your rubberboots on”.

I like the short distance passing. Works much better than in previous titles.

That's about it. Rest is pretty, pretty shitty tbh lol
