NHL 20 Beta - We want your feedback!

Yesterday EA SPORTS released the most wanted thing of the summer by releasing the NHL 20 Open Beta. As always, there had been a lot of talk and rumours around the web on whether it would come out or not, but it eventually did and the first impressions around the community - especially after having been presented with a list of improvements since the beta - have been cautiously positive. The tuning to the left trigger, the new animations to the goalies and the revamped shooting especially around the 6vs6 game mode has been mostly received well. But it's still early on and we've barely scratched the surface. This is of course a beta and a lot of improvements are still to be made. As one of the biggest NHL gaming sites in the world - not to mention the amazing talent and passion of our community members - we want to help out.

    NHL_20_Beta_feedback.jpg

So here's the deal: We want to hear what you guys think, so we can forward it to the producers and developers at EA SPORTS in a well structured and articulated way. We hope you take some time and write about your experiences (both the good and the bad) and possible issues and solutions that you have run into and hopefully this will help us all get the greatest NHL version yet! In the case of reporting bugs, we also hope that you include screenshots or short video clips to explain them better. Even if someone else already posted the same bug - it might be worth getting a 2nd or 3rd example of it and perhaps from another angle.

Please note that the official EA Answers HQ forum is also live and taking feedback and that is the official way of providing feedback of the beta. You can find it by clicking this text.

We here at NHLGamer want to discuss these things as a group and compile the feedback and bugs to the developers in an easy to chew form. You may write your feedback in any format you want, but we have included the below structure, edited from last years version.

    1. NHL Ones

    19. Offensive Play (i.e. how did it feel to play offense? How easy was it? Was there a skill gap? Were there limitations?)
    20. Defensive Play (i.e. how did it feel to play defense? How easy was it? Was there a skill gap? Were there limitations?)
    21. Human Goalies in EASHL
    22. The new presentation and scoreboard (if you're having problems with it, let us know if you did the configuration properly when starting the beta for the first time)
    23. Other (anything not covered here)

We would prefer your thoughts in English, as it will make the process quicker and make for a better discussion here in the community, as all can participate. However, we know there are those who can express themselves better in their maternal language, so for this purpose, we have made this topic discussable in some more languages in their specific topics:

A warm recommendation to post your feedback while it's still fresh and you haven't played too many Summer Cup games! :)

I want to submit the feedback this week.

Make it so you can cancel a saucer pass without doing a one hand tuck every time (I didn't try it in beta, just know that it's in nhl 19)

Pucks go over the boards too much

Need to get rid of the poke animation where you press R1 and he does a super slow motion poke check which is a penalty 99% of the time

Also need to drastically reduce tripping penalties when the puck is between the attacker and the defender (e.g. 1v1 zone entrance without L2)

Here is my somewhat late observations from the beta:

    1. NHL Ones
      • Played against the reigning champion (Griefff something) at one point and it seems that he had found a way to perform the insta-wrap consistently and in the process make the goalie jump out of his crease and thus creating an open goal. In every other aspect it was business as usual in Ones. In my opinion this game mode is unneccesary as it is not something you could build a scene around
    2. NHL THREES Drop-In (Arcade Threes)
      • Same as above, might be fun for a bit but nothing that can be played competitively due to it's higly scripted nature compared to other modes
    3. EASHL Drop-Ins (Please specify if it is in 3s/6s/both)
      • 6s and 3s: Could not spot any difference compared to last years edition. I am now talking about finding a game and the lobby. Gameplay and dressing room will be covered under other headers
    4. EASHL Club 3s
      • Same as above except that this is NHL Threes unscripted and probably the preferred version of 3s for warmups in this community
    5. EASHL Club 6s
      • The dressing room is kinda buggy as it does not refresh itself in real-time. This was easily fixed by either pressing unready/ready or by selecting a position. This has to be fixed until release though
      • Nice feature that you could now switch between builds and gamertag of all the players present in the dressing room and in waiting lobby when an opponent was found by using the right analog stick
      • Loading into a game felt smooth and I can't recall that anyone ever lost connection in any of the games I launched into
      • Still miss the feature of a goalie becoming the 6th man when he is pulled
      • A practice mode (It was promised? If it was, make it really happen!)
    6. AI skaters in World of Chel (specify mode + how many AI)
      • EASHL 3s/6s/Drop-in: The only feedback I have on the AI skaters is that they seem to have a hard time scoring on breakaways and the seem to always do something "unnatural", meaning that they always resort to some kind of weird shot instead of challenging the goalie with a deke or a well-timed shot that is a bit harder to read
    7. AI goalies in World of Chel (specify mode)
      • EASHL 3s/6s/Drop-in: As mentioned earlier, some players seem to have found a way to use the insta-wrap consistently and in the process make the goalie jump out of his crease and thus creating an open goal. This must be fixed until release! This will be devastating for people playing with/against AI goalies and I guess that this applies to versus/HUT as well. I don't have any video material available but maybe it's possible to reach out to the champ of Ones or something
    8. AI goalies in EASHL (specify if in 3s/6s)
      • Same as above
    9. Customization: Player Classes + Traits/Specializations
      • I don't know if this was a mistake but I really like the fact that the face-off trait was removed. I think that it limits the center as it was almost compulsory to have if you wanted win faceoffs
      • Remove the need of leveling for traits/specialzations
      • If the enforcer class is to included in this game, well then it needs an overhauld. I guess that you could buff the effects of hits and a fight won or that you could switch builds mid-game. But the bottom line is that this class is utterly useless at this point in my opinion
      • The traits are quite balanced but of course there are traits more used than others. I would like return to this argument when the "meta" has been found and see what traits are less used and see if they could use an overhaul
      • The goalie traits seem to be somewhat broken as the negative effects outweigh the positive in most cases and it seems that many goalies only use the specializations. An overhaul maybe?
    10. Customization: Gear (Casual + Pro gear + Gear Bags)
      • They are good as they are and I would not put a penny on these if microtransactions were implemented
    11. Other World of Chel related feedback
      • There should be some kind of function that you could re-map the menus so that one could load into the dressing room with one click instead of like 10
    12. Online Vs.
      • -
    13. AI Skaters in Online Vs.
      • -
    14. AI Goalies in Online Vs.
      • -
    15. Skating
      • Feels smooth and I really like the fact that defenders are punished if the are facing towards the opponent when they receive the puck in transition. The pivoting is a bit slower and this is positive in my opinion as defenders probably are less prone to pinch thus creating a new dynamic in the game
      • The backskating needs some more attention as it is still the go-to move for competitive players. It still is ridiculously effective
    16. Hitting (Collision Physics)
      • A bit broken to be fair as the line between charging and a good hit is too thin. It seems that you need some speed regardless of weight to even be able to hit and that kinda defeats the purpose of having a physically stronger build
    17. Pokechecking
      • Better than in NHL 19 as you seem to get punished for attempting a poke when positioned incorrectly but not as unforgiving as in the NHL 19 Beta
    18. Shooting
      • Massive improvements! It's so nice to see that snipes finally work on manual goalies. Mainly because goalies now are punished more for bad positioning than before but it still feels as if the shooting mechanism has been revamped and they certainly feels good to be able to use the sniper class again. The animations also look great
      • Rebound shots now look more natural
    19. Offensive Play (i.e. how did it feel to play offense? How easy was it? Was there a skill gap? Were there limitations?)
      • I think both offense and defense are quite balanced and it seems that we may have a new kind of offensive dynamic coming up as shooting is more effective. In NHL 19, you could almost survive with just clogging up the slot but as a well aimed shot from the outside now is a major threat, teams might be forced to play more balanced
    20. Defensive Play (i.e. how did it feel to play defense? How easy was it? Was there a skill gap? Were there limitations?)
      • Same as above
      • Some of the defender builds may need some more work as it clearly is too popular to use grinder or even playmaker on defense. It should not be the first choice when playing defense
    21. Human Goalies in EASHL
      • I really like the fact goalies now are punished even further for not challenging the shooter. For instance, if the opponents have the puck in the corner and you are just standing at the nearest post without holding it you will most likely be punished hard if you don't challenge the shooter if they happen to shoot it through the gap between you and the post or if they get a one-timer off the slot and shoot it to your far post. It seems that you can't rely on the animation to take care of the one-timer to the far post. This was way more lenient in NHL 19 in my opinion
      • The animation made by the goalie when receiving a shot from the neutral zone is horrendeous. It's slow and you can in no way cancel it. I would much rather have the goalie move freely until the puck collides with the goalie and a plus would be if you could manually control the reception by manually using the right analog stick to shove the puck to the corner (timing it) instead of waiting for the animation by sitting in the butterfly position
    22. The new presentation and scoreboard (if you're having problems with it, let us know if you did the configuration properly when starting the beta for the first time)
      • I actually like the placement of the scoreboard, good decision to move it to the bottom
      • I mean, it's kinda hilarious with the pre-game dances and all but was that really necessary?
      • Remove the unskippable replays and consider an observer function with replay controls
    23. Other (anything not covered here)
      • As stated every year these feedback threads appear - consider adding an observer function so you can join games a spectator. This would take broadcasts to new heights
      • Another thing that would be benificial in live tournaments - the ability to pause the game without a 30 second timer and instead only use a "ready"-function (players need to press ready to resume the game). Only viable in tournaments though, would be a drag in normal EASHL
      • The automatic spin-o-rama when clicking L2 - why is it not an option? I want to turn it off!
      • And while we are at it - why can't we manually assign buttons? No need to tamper with the analog stick functions, but remapping the buttons would be a nice feature

    1. NHL Ones = Not a huge fan of the mode, played one game, so can´t say much, but goalies were pretty poor. For me, only reason to play it is to get those hockey bags, play for one game every day and maybe you get those fancy Sweden skates early.
    2. NHL THREES Drop-In (Arcade Threes) = N/A
    3. EASHL Drop-Ins (Please specify if it is in 3s/6s/both) = Played couple drop- ins, both 6s and 3s, so not a huge sample size - I think you could leave even when the timer was on red if not enough players, that was nice. Other than that did not see anything too ´wild´ compared to 19. Outdoor action not for me.
    4. EASHL Club 3s = NA
    5. EASHL Club 6s = As mentioned already here, dressing room was buggy. Also, sometimes when heading into a game it looked like someone dropped like you might see in NHL 19, but in all reality everybody into the game, happened few times.
    6. AI skaters in World of Chel (specify mode + how many AI) = N/A
    7. AI goalies in World of Chel (specify mode) = N/A
    8. AI goalies in EASHL (specify if in 3s/6s) = N/A
    9. Customization: Player Classes + Traits/Specializations = I also liked the fact that centers are not forced to use the faceoff trait - everybody on the same line, now we perhaps see more variety on what builds people use! If I remember correctly defensive defender had 85 in passing without any traits used = nice. About time defensive defender gets some love.
    10. Customization: Gear (Casual + Pro gear + Gear Bags) = I can live without them, I guess it´s nice to have some skates and sticks that you can use, but other than that - I would get more enjoyment out of designing my own skates and using whatever stick.
    11. Other World of Chel related feedback = N/A
    12. Online Vs. = N/A
    13. AI Skaters in Online Vs. = N/A
    14. AI Goalies in Online Vs. = N/A
    15. Skating = Skating back first was a viable tactic, so could work on that EVEN if it was maybe not as bad as in NHL 19.  Felt a lot better overall when comparing to NHL 19, I don´t know what it was, skating, animations or combination of both, but beta felt a lot better.
    16. Hitting (Collision Physics) = Might have to bump it or something, not as effective as you might think,  especially for defenders it´s annoying when ´nothing´ happens if you line up a solid hit.
    17. Pokechecking = Tried couple times, puck left the stick nicely and might be a real weapon if used correctly. (Learned not to use it too much in previous versions, so small sample size)
    18. Shooting = Improved backhander is great, close range top shelf = oh my. Managed to score couple goals against a human G with a direct shot, sniper build indeed had real danger feel to it, fun to play when you can actually ´trust´ in your main weapon - the shot. I did not feel the shooting being overpowered or anything, shooting one timer from blueline for example did not result in a goal automatically, just the shots that you might expect, free shots from close range.
    19. Offensive Play (i.e. how did it feel to play offense? How easy was it? Was there a skill gap? Were there limitations?) = I think you need to pay more attention where you pass and how you pass, players who know how to move and playing with players who know how to move are even more valuable now, pucks are more easily intercepted, but you can also make little passes in small space more easily, so like minokin mentioned - balance is good. (Using backhander and shooting in general was fun)
    20. Defensive Play (i.e. how did it feel to play defense? How easy was it? Was there a skill gap? Were there limitations?) = Going for the hit was not a good move usually, felt like nothing good came out of it, so just better to stay calm and ´passive´, which might be right most of the time anyways, but sometimes would be nice if you can use the body bit more and know a good hit results in at least the guy with the puck feeling it. Great that you can play knowing that your player actually intercepts passes, proper shutdown D-mode activated! If you positioned yourself poorly -  you paid the price for it. Overall, I liked the defensive play even after first it maybe felt bit awkward with the puck bouncing around ´wildly´ in front of your net, if you went closer - good chance you pushed in yourself for good own goal.
    21. Human Goalies in EASHL = Not much I can say, did not play G, but those wild pucks near the nets were something, for example if puck was under the goalie - what can you do as a defensive player?  Offensive guys could just poke spam it in, not sure what that is, but should look into it.
    22. The new presentation and scoreboard (if you're having problems with it, let us know if you did the configuration properly when starting the beta for the first time) = turned the scoreboard off right away, I don´t want to configurate anything - how hard it is to give simple scoreboard? Score, period and how much is left on the period? I don´t want anything else. Presentation without the dances was ok, cool to see some stats.
    23. Other (anything not covered here) = Beta was a big improvement compared to NHL 19, I would not change much in all honesty, maybe look into goalies and how they could close the puck better when it´s under them, but as mentioned did not play G, so no idea in reality, but beta was fun to play both on offense and in defense. I hope the actual game is close to it - going to be good!

In display settings there should be an option to select the scoreboard position; up or down. Also too often the goalies saves the puck out of game.

And of course the things we have asked for every year for current gen consoles: We need more customizing tools for logos, jerseys and in-game music etc.

Earlier old FIFA's (2014 at least) had that kind of online creation centre that  would work on NHL series too.
