The Falun Coal Miners return for a fifth straight season of ECL, making the team one of less than 15 (!) teams to play in all ECL seasons thus far.

As the Miners return we do so with a lot of familiar faces, a few new ones and most noticeably - a new logo, courtesy of NHLGamer logo master @cHIIMEERa:

To mix things up a little bit, the roster presentation for the Coal Miners will happen in three steps... but not the three steps you think  :ph34r:

While it is custom to introduce goaltenders, defenders and forwards separately, we decided to do things a little bit differently this time. Therefore, the three steps of our FCM player presentations will be called "The Prospects", "The Free Agency Signings" and "The Original Six".

First out among these three categories are The Original Six; the six skaters who were there when the Falun Coal Miners first sprung into action in ECL 1.

GOALTENDER

@Onecorner95 (Player profile)
Jersey #: 2
ECL season, FCM: 5th
Career stats, FCM: 66 GP, 32 W, 28 L, 6 OTL, 76.36%, 2.87 GAA, 4 Shutouts
Player type: Butterfly goaltender
Information: The backbone of FCM for most of his career, this young goaltender has already amassed plenty of ECL experience and will be looking to have his best season yet statistically. Rock solid positioning, positive spirit and insane enthusiasm for big hits are among onecorner95s biggest strengths as a player. Probably the only Coal Miner who would know how to handle an actual pick axe!

DEFENDERS

@The_Alpha_Furyan [Captain] (Player profile)
Jersey #: 77
ECL season, FCM: 4th
Career stats, FCM: 76 GP, 34 G, 75 A, 109 P, -20
Player type: Puck Moving Defenseman
Information: Team captain for 4 out of 5 seasons. Returns to FCM home arena "The Mine" after sessions in Sjukstugan and Dynasty. Dedicated to bring back the offensive blueline turnovers that FCM was sorely lacking last season :)

@Meeertz [Assistant Captain] (Player profile)
Jersey #: 14
ECL season, FCM: 5th
Career stats, FCM: 73 GP, 10 G, 42 A, 52 P, -12
Player type: Two-Way Defenseman
Information: Took over captaincy duties while brothers The_Alpha_Furyan and LastMandalorian set out on their Pokémon-catching adventures last season. Did an admirable job of keeping the ship afloat and almost managed to get FCM past their most famous nemesis: the 1st round of the ECL playoffs. As a player, Meeertz is a true two-way defender with a breakout pass to rival that of Hall of Fame defender Tom Linder.

FORWARDS

@PatzyDrake (Player profile
Jersey #: 54
ECL season, FCM: 5th
Career stats, FCM: 87 GP, 96 G, 80 A, 176 P, -10
Player type: Powerforward
Information: FCM team leader in every statistical category except Plus/Minus where The_Alpha_Furyan holds a comfortable (and embarrassing) -20 lead, PatzyDrake identifies as a pure goal scorer. He scores. A lot. If you know what I mean :) This hulking LW will undoubtedly hit goal #100 in an FCM jersey this season and if he puts his mind to it, quite possibly goal #200 too.

@LastMandalorian [Assistant Captain] (Player profile)
Jersey #: 17
ECL season, FCM: 4th
Career stats, FCM: 48 GP, 23 G, 34 A, 57 P, -19
Player type: Two-Way Dangler
Information: Flip-flops his preferences for player position more than Donald Trump on Twitter but seems to have decided to leave goaltender behind and make the Center position his own for the forseeable future. The Last of the Mandalorians models his game after Japanse wunderkid Aito Iguchi and goes to his happy place when the puck is on his stick gliding through the neutral zone.

@iscojr94 (Player profile)
Jersey #: 90
ECL season, FCM: 5th
Career stats, FCM: 80 GP, 45 G, 92 A, 137 P, -5
Player type: Playmaker
Information: Whenever FCM goes out clubbing after ECL victories (which, admittedly, is a quite rare occurence) iscojr94 is the squads only hope of getting into the VIP area. As smooth and elegant on the ice as he is in real life, this puck-saucing RW has found tremendous chemistry playing with Mandalorian and Drake. Look for Isco to score more points than he ever has before if his tiny playmaker can keep dodging hits from monstrous defenders.

NEXT UP, The Prospects :)

Next up are The Prospects.

While "prospects" is generally used as a term for young, up-and-coming players in real life hockey, the Falun Coal Miners version of virtual hockey "prospects" combines the traditional hockey concept with that of outlaw motorcycle gangs. Strange you say? Not so!

Wikipedia has the following to say on prospects: "Some "biker" clubs employ a process whereby members must pass several stages such as "friend of the club", "hang-around", and "prospect", on their way to becoming full-patch membersIn these clubs, some amount of hazing may occur during the early stages ranging from the mandatory performance of menial labor tasks for full patch members to sophomoric pranks, and, in rare cases with some outlaw motorcycle clubs, acts of violence"

While we do not plan on forcing our dear prospects into performing any acts of violence, they might have to clean the locker room bathrooms and collect all the pucks after practice from time to time. Without further ado, here they are:

Prospects

@Sawardo (No player profile)
Jersey #: 7
ECL season, FCM: 1st
Career stats, FCM: N/A
Player type: Two-way defender/forward
Information: Imported from the TPS regions of Åbo, Finland, the skill of this 25-year old Finn was first discovered by Head Scout @LastMandalorian through the very inofficial VOCL (Viaplay Office Couch League). With a booming slapshot as his main weapon, this natural defenseman has signed a PTO (professional tryout contract) with FCM to "watch and learn" during his first ECL season. Has significant EASHL experience stretching back to 2010, but is completely untested in 6v6 tournament play. Counts Henrik Tallinder as his favorite player due to his dominating run as an assistant captain for TPS.

@R00tster89 (Player profile)
Jersey #: 89 (previously wore 15 but with a new Free Agency signing coming in, gracefully relinquished the number)
ECL season, FCM: 3rd
Career stats, FCM: 16 GP, 11 G, 12 A, 23 P, +4
Player type: Sniper
Information: Arguably the most natural virtual hockey sniper in the entire Södertälje area, R00tster joins the Coal Miners for his third season as a prospect. Mainly known amongst his teammates for two things: playing with a left-handed stick on the left wing and being one of the only ECL players ever to use the "Sniper" player type (the small one). While still counted as a prospect, R00tster is not without experience as he has been playing EASHL with the FCM captaincy brothers since NHL 2012. Will probably not get alot of ice time in ECL due to more important obligations in life BUT will shoot the puck when you least expect it.

NEXT UP, The Free Agency Signings :)

Finally we've reached the last part of our roster announcement; our brand-new Coal Miners. While recruiting players to your team, the importance of aquiring players that are a "good fit" for the teams style of play cannot be overstated.

Unfortunately for the Coal Miners, we haven't quite figured out what our style of play is yet... so when recruiting players we had to do it the old-fashioned way: with the false promise of a lofty salary further down the line :ph34r:

Here are the two insanely talented players we managed to lure to our squad using this devious tactic:

Free Agency Signings

@pentsaa (Player profile
Jersey #: 58
ECL season, FCM: 1st
Career stats, ECL: 19 GP, 8 G, 20 A, 28 P, +31
Player type: Two-way defender/forward
Information: Fresh off an eye-opening performance in the Summer Cup for eventual finalist 50 Shades of Blades, this young Finn probably had plenty of offers to choose from ahead of ECL 5. His soft hands on the ice and great mind for the game isn't even the greatest thing about this this defender/forward hybrid, its that he can curse at the rest of the team both in his native Finnish and Swedish! All kidding aside, pentsaa is poised for a breakout season and if his history with the Finnish Roosters and performance in the Summer Cup is any indication, he will make for an explosive addition to The Mine. Just, you know, hopefully not too explosive. Mines collapse.

@minokin (Player profile)
Jersey #: 15
ECL season, FCM: 1st
Career stats, ECL: 58 GP, 12 G, 44 A, 56 P, -83
Player type: Two-way defender/forward, Butterfly goaltender
Information: This veteran ECL:er brings a wealth of experience, poise and calm to a roster that seems better prepared than it ever has been for ECL competition. A match made in heaven it would seem and sometimes, things are just that - exactly what they seem. Outside of dazzling plays on the ice and solid defending, "mino" has the mind and voice of a storyteller. What might begin as a harmless story in a PSN party will easily transition into a riveting drama where axe-murdering women and car racing hockey players are front and center.

Welcome to the Falun Coal Miners guys :x  We hope you won't be running for the exists in a state of absolute panic until at least half the season is over!

With our Roster finalized and ready for ECL 5, the time has come to release links to FCM social media a.k.a. where we post weird stuff that you can comment on... or ignore. Most likely ignore. But hopefully comment on!

We only (lol) have two channels and plan to keep it that way for the forseeable future (too much maintenance!).

We are rocking a Twitch channel where we will be broadcasting most of our games in ECL 5. Important to note is that we will NOT be broadcasting games using the goaltender Be A Pro-angle. Shame on you streamers who use it... shame on you.

We also just recently set up a Facebook page where our content will be more geared towards posting lineups, scores, game reviews, gameplay videos and all the other Facebook stuff that sounds good to say but usually ends up being just memes. So yeah, we will be posting memes and other stuff.

ECL 5 Pro

Game 1: FCM vs. murohoki 2-1, OT (1-0, 0-1, 0-0, 1-0)
Game 2: FCM @. murohoki 1-0 (0-0, 0-0, 1-0)

Two tight, defensive games where both team strived to keep the opponents from scoring rather than attacking with creativity. In the end, we left the dressing room having collected 4 out of a possible 4 points, but we will have to be better in the future. Props to murohoki for good games.

Game Hatchet for G1: @LastMandalorian with the GWG in OT.
Game Hatchet for G2: @Onecorner95 with the shutout to win the game for us.

Game 3: FCM @ Nemesis 5-2 (2-0, 0-0, 3-1)
Game 4: FCM vs Nemesis 5-1 (1-0, 2-0, 2-1)

More offense this game but still not clicking 100% for the Coal Miners when it comes to passing and positioning. That said, we will take the 4 points and move forward towards our next battle with The Hogs.

Game Hatchet for G3: @iscojr94 with 2+2 to lead the offense
Game Hatchet for G4: @PatzyDrake with 2+1 to lead the offense

ECL 5 Pro

Game 5: FCM vs SIKA 3-5 (1-2, 0-1, 2-2)
Game 6: FCM @ SIKA 4-7 (1-1, 2-5, 1-1)

Our hubris came crashing down hard in these matchups. An overly confident approach, relying on our offense to win the game, led to SIKAs counter-attacks tearing us apart. Well played by them and a lesson for us.

Game Hatchet for G5 & 6: @iscojr94 for telling his Captain ( :ph34r: ) to man up and quit complaining. Needed to be said, well spoken.

Game 7: FCM @ Squirt Hockey 5-2 (1-0, 3-1, 1-1)
Game 8: FCM vs Squirt Hockey 6-4 (1-0, 4-0, 1-4)

A return to form by an FCM lineup that featured a different setup than previous games. Both matchups featured strong 1st and 2nd periods for the Mining squad, only for us to falter a bit in the 3rd when the games felt "secure". A lesson to be learned here as well, surely.

Game Hatchet for G7: @Meeertz for shutting down any and all of the oppositions attack attempts on his defensive right side.
Game Hatchet for G8: @pentsaa aka Mr Smorre Vikingstad gets the honor here after 3+3 in a 6-4 win.

ECL 5 Pro Playoffs - FCM report

I'd like to start off by thanking all the viewers who tuned in to CoalMinersTV on Twitch for Games 1-3 on Sunday, helping us set a new record for number of simultaneous viewers (47) and pushing us past the 50-limit when it comes to subscribers (51). A big 'ol thank you to everyone out there :)

As you may have seen, things didn't quite turn out the way we had hoped in those three games. We lost all three games by scores of 2-3 (OT), 0-4 and 2-4 while not looking like the team that managed to fight their way through the first round. Nordic Stars were crushing us, and we knew it.

So, for games 4-7, me and assistant captain @LastMandalorian decided to get back to basics and eliminate all distractions. No witty gameday posts, no promotion of the games, no stream. Just two teams going head-to-head for a chance to make it to the final four in ECL 5 Pro.

To our complete shock and utter joy, it worked. For four games yesterday, this squad of Miners came as close as it ever had to playing perfect hockey. Now, I wont bore you with every little detail, but if you are curious - here is a short recap how it went down.

Game 4:  Things looked grim as captain @The_Alpha_Furyan took a penalty only 14 in-game seconds in (yeah, I know), but we battled back and managed to get up 2-0 in the first period. NS got a goal in the second but we held on for a 2-1 W. 1-3 series.

Game 5: Never did things look more hopeless than in Game 5. NS got up to a 2-0 lead and carried it into the second period. The comeback began in the 2nd period with a behind-the-back deflection goal from series MVP, center LastMandalorian. With 5 minutes left in the 3rd, LW @PatzyDrake timed a long pass perfectly in front of the net and 2-2 was a fact. In the Overtime, NS had a shot ring off the post before "Mando" carried the puck down the left wing and straight-up sniped it bar down. 3-2 OTW and 2-3 series.

Game 6:  Another 2-0 lead after the first period led us to victory in this one. RD @minokin was the first star here with 1+1. Another 2-1 W and series tied at 3.

Game 7:  Our best game of the playoffs. RW @pentsaa led the way with 1+2 and G @Onecorner95 pitched a shutout for a 4-0 W. 4-3 series win.

Thanks to every player on Nordic Stars for a tremendous series. I don't think I will ever forget this experience, lame as that sounds.

On to the next round where we will face Unlucky Boys HC :)

ECL 5 Pro Playoffs: Semifinals vs. Unlucky Boys HC

As you are getting ready to watch the ECL 5 Elite finals live tonight on NHLGamerTwitch at 22 CET, featuring terrific commentary from @OxtreeLAT and @janbonator, you might find yourself wondering - what will I do until then? Well, wonder no more as the Falun Coal Miners are set to continue their unlikely underdog journey in the Pro playoffs versus the regular season-juggernaught Unlucky Boys HC.

Catch games 1-3 of the series Live tonight 20.30 CET @ Twitch.tv/CoalMinersTV.

Who knows? We might even surpass our previous records of 47 viewers at one time! Our mothers always told us to aim high so we've decided that we are also gunning to surpass 60 Twitch followers before the end of ECL 5. Our current total sits at 51 so it might seem like an impossible task but we shall trust in the Force and see what happens.

Tonights lineup:

#54 @PatzyDrake - #17 @LastMandalorian - #90 @iscojr94

#77 @The_Alpha_Furyan - #15 @minokin

#2 @Onecorner95

ECL 6 Elite

So... we ended up surpassing 60 followers on Twitch. Yay! We also lost in the Pro playoffs semifinals to Unlucky Boys by a series score of 2-4. Boo. But we got promoted to Elite anyway. Yay! Now we have to try and survive a full season against the best teams in all of Europe. Shit.

Anyway, we're back. FCM that is. Falun Coal Miners that is. We are returning to the ECL for a sixth straight tournament! By our count, with Aapon Taikasauva folding, that makes us one of just 11 teams to have competed in all six ECL tournaments - joining TIKI TALK, Gotham Knights (Refuse To Lose), Silver Sword Griffins, Northern Stars, Sjukstugan, Kattiautomaatti, Synergy Hockey, SIKA, Dynasty, Northern Ascendancy.

That is cool! It also suggests we are huge nerds. Which is also cool in a nerdy way.

Anyway, here is our roster for ECL 6 (Spoiler alert: we barely made any changes):

------------------------------------------
G onecorner95
G IFKPEKING2k15

LD The_Alpha_Furyan
RD minokin-
RD/W Meeertz

LW PatzyDrake
C LastMandalorian
C/W pentsaa
RW iscojr94
Berger-I88I
------------------------------------------

Finally, we again have a few "unlikely to reach"-social media goals for this season - namely reaching 150 Likes on Facebook (we currently sit at 129) and 100 subscribers on Twitch (chillin' at 73 currently). If you want to help keep the dream alive for a group of delusional guys with virtual ice hockey dreams, you know what to do.

Much love, gents.

ECL 6 Elite - Season report

***

⛏️ Week 1 (1-3-0 vs. NOR, NOS):
After winning our first game versus Northern Ascendancy 2-1 in OT, we were riding high. "Is this what the season is going to be like?", we thought. Spurred on by positive comments around the community, we suddenly realized we had a shot at making a statement as a newcomer to Elite. "We're just as good as these guys right, why wouldn't we be?", we started to believe. Then, after splitting the games with NOR, we came across NOS and got shellacked 8-1 and 2-1. Tough second matchup for sure, and not one we're particularly proud of. Still, the first week left us cautiously optimistic we could steal a few points here and there and maybe fly under the radar.

⛏️ Week 2 (0-6-0 vs. SJK, SKY & RB):
"Is this what the season is going to be like?", we thought once more - this time with our cheeks red of embarrasment and our eyes locked in empty stares. FCM got "lit the fuck up", as the cool kids say, in the second week of our Elite rookie season. I mean, we're not talking games that were close either. At least, not that close. Losses by 1-3 and 1-6 to SJK were followed by similar scores (1-3, 0-4) against Written. We simply could not score, nor could we keep the puck out of our own net. After starting the season 1-7-0, our final games of the week versus Rusty Blades were seen as a potential turning point for the season. "We've beaten these guys before - lets get to work on another hollywood comeback story!", we told each other. The results? 0 points through 0-1 and 2-3 losses.

⛏️ Week 3 (3-3-0 vs. PTH, SSG & NS):
Panic started to creep in. The way things were going, our 1-9-0 start had all but ensured that we would have no shot at the playoffs, but now another fear started to manifest itself: What if we didn't win another game this season? Screw being relegated, what if we end up with the worst record in Elite history? Would we prove that a team built slowly through player development and friendship just wasnt cut out for Elite or would we do something about it?

Drastic measures were needed and drastic measures were taken. RW iscojr94 was shifted to RD, LastMandalorian from C to RW, PatzyDrake from LW to C and defender Meeertz put at LW with specific orders to crash the net and make us hard to play against. Against Pata Hellalla, we finally tasted the sweet nectar of victory again as we gained 4 out of a possible 4 points. It felt like a new dawn was emerging and that our drastic measures had worked. Then came SSG where we barely escaped with a total 2 points (1-0, 0-3) after scoring just 1 goal throughout the matchup. Then, against Nordic Stars, another incredibly humbling defeat. Nordic Stars dismantled us completely by scores of 5-1 and 3-1 and all the optimism gained after the Pata wins were slowly evaporating.

⛏️ Week 4 (5-1-0 vs. Evo, CAT & UB):
The captains gathered for another meeting. "Did we right the ship last week or are further adjustments needed?", was the hotly debated topic. "We did finally manage some wins and changing things up again could mean a loss of security and comfort."

Ultimately, it was decided further changes were required if we were to have a chance at surviving relegation and salvaging what was left of the season. PatzyDrake stayed at C but LastMandalorian was shifted a second time - this time to RD. Meanwhile Berger-88, a complete rookie to ECL competition but with some previous 6v6 experience, was thrown into the lineup with little preparation. In the first few EASHL games with the new constellation, things appeared to be clicking. Still, it wasn't until we surprised ourselves by defeating reigning Pro champions Evolution through scores of 3-0 and 4-0 in the ECL, that we started to realize we might have something good on our hands. We then proceeded to battle our way past Katti with identical 2-1 wins. Finally, we managed to snag one more win against Unlucky Boys in our final matchup of the week.

That was yesterday and here we are now, stuck in the no-mans land purgatory that is spots 9-12 in the standings. Are we happy with where we are? All things considered, yeah I would say we are. With such an up-and-down season, it is safe to say we will never know the answer to the question "Is this what the season is going to be like?" because in Elite there simply isn't a way to predict what any new day or matchup will bring. All we know is that we have four opponents remaining and with our backs to the wall, we are going to make life as difficult as we possibly can for those guys.

ECL 6 Elite - END OF THE SEASON

*****

After maintaining a somewhat consistent level during our final two weeks of the season - going 3-1-4 for a total of 10 points in 8 games versus Gotham Knights, Dynasty, Sjukstugan and Carlsberg HC - Falun Coal Miners managed to secure our contract in Elite by finishing 12th overall. FCM's total record ended up being 12-14-4 for 28 points, with a vast majority of those points coming in the second half once the team managed to get up to speed with the level of competition.

Next season you can be sure we will practice harder, come out strong right out of the gate and in the end be right in the thick of it when the playoff spots are decided. This journey of ours... has just begun :ph34r:

To celebrate our ultimate survival, we decided to throw a giveaway/lottery at our Facebook page! The rules were simple, once we got to 160 Likes we would give away a fine-looking FCM t-shirt. Now, we've already hit 160 Likes (yay!) but the t-shirt draw wont be until later tonight, so if you want in - click your way onto this post of ours, follow the instructions and be among the contenders to win the draw:

INTRODUCING... FC MINERS

So, we happened to start a FIFA Pro Clubs team as well. We're not very good yet - hey, YOU try kicking a ball around a pitch black coal mine! - but we are determined to get better. Like, really determined. "Neymar diving his way to a penalty"-determined.

Anyway...

...that's why we've decided to issue a public challenge to any and all e-sports teams out there in the community to face us in a Best of-7 series, broadcasted on CoalMinersTV. What do you say gamers - is it time to show those pesky, annoying Mineboys how soccer (*football) is played?

Check the FB post for more details ⛏️🎮

How many players do you play with?

Nice! 112 vs. FCM - classic battle.

We try and play with 6+ players, 'ANY' active to minimize bot influence and goalkeeper optional to control or not 😊
